Rui Machete

Minister of State And Foreign Affairs

Born on April 7, 1940, in Setúbal. Married, three children.

He has a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon. He took a post-graduate course in Economic and Political Science at Lisbon University Law School in 1963. He received the Calouste Gulbenkian award for Historical and Juridical Science in 1960 and for Economic and Political Science in 1962. He has been a practicing attorney since 1964.

He was a professor at the School of Social Studies and at the School of Labor and Corporate Studies, where he lectured in a number of subjects. He has also taught Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Political Science at the University of Lisbon's Law School. He is a professor at the Universidade Católica, where he teaches Administrative Law and Procedure.

Secretary of State for Emigration in 1975.

Minister of Social Affairs from 1976 to 79 in the Sixth Provisional Government.

Founding member of the Oliveira Martins Foundation (where he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors since it was created).

Member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Portugal from 1981 to 1983.

Minister of Justice of the Ninth Constitutional Government between 1983 and 1985.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the Ninth Constitutional Government in 1985.

Member of Portuguese Parliament from 1976 to 1995 and chairman of the parliamentary committee for economics of the Fourth and Fifth Legislatures in 1985.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for the Second and Third Constitutional Revisions (1988-89 and 1992).

Chairman of the Executive Council of the Luso-American Development Foundation between 1983 and 2010.

Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the 19º Constitutional Government 24 July 2013.
