EUROPEAN COMMISSION ASSUMED ITS ROLE AS GUARDIAN OF THE TREATIES AND OF THE EUROPEAN SPIRIT

The European Commission's decision to recommend cancelation of the sanction procedures to Portugal for non-compliance of the limits of the budgetary deficit between 2013-2015 «is good news for Portugal, Europe, for the European spirit and also for the European construction», said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Augusto Santos Silva in Lisbon.

The Minister referred that the European Commission assumed «its role as guardian of the treaties and of the European spirit». Santos Silva said the decision of the European Commission was revealing of how «the Portuguese arguments were solid» and «the reason was, and is, on our side» regarding the previous discussions around the sanctions.

«Today's decision by the College of Commissioners was fully in line with the arguments presented by Portugal and the Portuguese Government», he added.

The Minister also affirmed that this decision was revealing of how the «European game is a game still worth playing» which means «understanding arguments by the others», presenting our arguments «and cooperating with the European Institutions in order to defend our nations interests».

To conclude, Santos Silva highlighted the national consensus against the application of sanctions.
