It is a great pleasure to be here with you for the signing of two loan agreements extended by the European Investment Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank, in a total amount of 280 million euros, to finance the National Irrigation Programme.
This investment will target projects designed to expand and modernise existing irrigation areas and to renovate its infrastructure..
This initiative is instrumental to finance the modernisation and expansion of irrigation infrastructure in mainland regions of the country, particularly in the Alentejo, served by the Alqueva water system, which constitutes the largest water reserve in Europe. Indeed, the project aims at fostering economic development in rural areas, and strengthening resilience to the effects of climate change.
