Portugal and Morocco sign an agreement on Moroccan workers working and staying in Portugal

Portugal and Morocco signed an agreement on Moroccan workers working and staying in Portugal, part of the endeavours to tighten bilateral relations.

Underwritten by the heads of diplomacy of both countries, the agreement defines the procedures for Moroccan workers to enter national soil in order to perform paid work in Portugal, creating a legal framework in terms of recruiting, hiring and accepting Moroccan citizens. This is in strict compliance with the Portuguese law and equal rights and duties to Portuguese workers.

The signing of the agreement on Moroccan workers working and staying in the Portuguese Republic is the outcome of a multisector coordination effort in both countries and is of great political significance as it allows the deepening of the two countries’ historical and fruitful bilateral relations, through promoting and protecting the dignity and human rights of migrant workers.

Under the framework of implementing the Global Compact for Migration adopted by the UN in Marrakech in December 2018, both parties have the shared interest of fighting illegal migration and human trafficking, thereby setting up a legal and regulated migration channel.

The occasion was also an opportunity for the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad from the Kingdom of Morocco, Nasser Bourita, to take stock of bilateral relations, whose excellence was acknowledged, an example of which is the document signed today.
