Government restricts circulation to and from the Lisbon Metropolitan Area at the weekend

The Minister of State and the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, stated that "the Government decided there will be no circulation to and from the Lisbon Metropolitan Area at the weekend".

At the press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting in Lisbon, the Minister noted that this measure reflects "the attempt to keep the growing number of cases from spreading to the rest of the country". There will be no circulation from 3 pm on Friday to 6 am on Monday. This restriction will enter into force on 18 June.

"This is an additional measure the Government took to contain the spread of cases as seen in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area", she added.

Mariana Vieira da Silva also highlighted that a large part of the councils under alert (Alcochete, Águeda, Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Grândola, Lagos, Mafra, Moita, Montijo, Odivelas, Oeiras, Palmela, Sardoal, Seixal, Setúbal, Sines, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Vila Franca de Xira) are located in the Lisbon area.

The Minister added that there are ten councils whose status is different to that in the rest of the country. Sesimbra registered more than 240 cases per 1000 inhabitants in two weeks, for the second week running, and has gone back in the lockdown ease plan. Among other measures, restaurants and facilities will close at 3:30 pm at the weekend.

The councils of Albufeira, Arruda dos Vinhos, Braga, Cascais, Lisbon, Loulé, Odemira, Sertã and Sintra have the measures in place that were in force prior to the last lockdown ease stage, on 10 June. Alcanena, Paredes de Coura, Santarém and Vale de Cambra councils have recovered and are below the applicable alert threshold.

Mariana Vieira da Silva also noted that the overall setting in Portugal "has been deteriorating as the epidemiological situation worsens". "We are clearly far from a green zone" said the Minister, claiming that "it will be hard to ease lockdown next week", as Portugal today registered an incidence of 90.5 and R of 1.13.

The Minister reiterated the measures that every citizen must continue to follow to contain the pandemic, such as the use of masks, social distancing, washing and sanitizing hands, and others.
