Press Release on the elections in Guinea-Bissau

The Portuguese Government salutes and commends the Guinean people for the peaceful and orderly manner of today's presidential elections.

The first indications point to a significant participation of voters. The Guineans freely expressed their preferences, in line with the general elections of last March.  They have thus demonstrated their strong commitment to the country's democratic consolidation.

Portugal awaits an aggregation of the results and urges all stakeholders to ensure full respect for the popular will, within the framework of the Constitution and applicable laws.

Portugal reiterates its strong commitment to this new cycle of hope in the life of its brother country Guinea-Bissau.
