Intervenção do Ministro das Finanças e Presidente do Eurogrupo no Diálogo com os Cidadãos no ISEG

«It is a pleasure to be here today to talk about the reforms of the euro with Valdis and with all of you.

I am especially pleased to do so in ISEG where I studied to become an economist.

I am also happy to see a room full of students interested in these topics. Europe is part of us, not a distant reality. The best way to reinforce it is to debate, together, the future of our common currency.

Deepening EMU discussions can be quite dry and abstract. Even among economists. All too often European integration discussions slide to the same old institutional fights that people can’t relate to.

You may actually say: the euro came out stronger from the crisis, and the economic situation in Europe is good, why should we bother?

The answer to that is a lesson we have learned in the crisis and we have learned it the hard way.

I will argue that the euro is unfinished business. If we don’t fix it, the next crisis will come sooner and it will hurt just as much. If we do our work, we’ll be able to extend the current growth period and to better withstand future shocks.»
