Fernando Alexandre was born in 1972.
He holds a PhD in Economics from Birkbeck College, University of London, a Master’s and undergraduate degree from Coimbra University.
Associate specialist Professor at Minho University, where he as Pro-rector, Head of the School of economics and Head of the Economics Department
In 2023, he coordinated the economic and financial assessment of the new Lisbon airport.
From 2020 to 2024, he was Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council.
His research interests are macroeconomics, assessing public policy, and the Portuguese economy’s development.
He wrote several books, among which Crisis and Punishment and From Made In to Created In – A new paradigm for the Portuguese Economy by Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation.
He published more than 20 articles in international scientific reviews, namely Labour Economics, Small Business Economics, Journal of Technology Transfer, Regional Studies or Higher Education.
He has acted as a consultant for private and public institutions, including the European Commission and the Portuguese Government.
In 2022, he was awarded the University of Minho Scientific Merit Prize.
He was Deputy Minister of Home Afaris from 2011 to 2015.
He was Minister of Education, Science and Innovation in the previous Government.
