The Government has been permanently monitoring the impact of the Storm Kristin in Portugal. As expected, this was an extreme weather event that caused significant damage in parts of the country in various domains, infrastructures and facilities. The consequences were mitigated by the early warnings issued by the civil protection bodies and the responsible and prudent behaviour by the Portuguese people. This must remain in force until otherwise indicated by the Portuguese National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).
Following the authorities’ guidelines and avoiding circulating in the areas most affected is fundamental.
Efforts are being made to resume normality status in the most affected aeras, namely in terms of electricity and communications supply, and transportation, which in some situations will require physical intervention.
The electricity sector bodies are working towards resuming electricity supply, whose outage is still affecting thousands of people, especially in the central coastal regions.
The Portuguese National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority has been coordinating the monitoring and operational reaction by the public administration of the storm’s impact and will offer due information soon.
The Government deeply regrets the loss of two lives and offers the family of the victims its heartfelt condolences.
