The Portuguese Prime Minister and the Government have been constantly following since the beginning the situation in Venezuela in close collaboration with the President of the Republic. They are doing so via the Portuguese Embassy in Caracas and the consular network in the country, as well as via intense contacts with European partners, the EU institutions, and countries in the region.
During this process, the Government contacted directly the President of the Madeira Regional Government and main opposition forces.
As was told to the media throughout the morning, the absolute priority is the safety and well-being of the Portuguese community in Venezuela, which is well and calm, although naturally expectant. Given the state of emergency declared in the meantime, the Government reiterates its request for tranquillity and caution addressed to the Portuguese community in Venezuela.
Not having recognised the election results in 2024 and advocating the return to democratic normality as swiftly as possible, Portugal calls on a lessening of tension, respect for international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as promoting public safety and tranquillity.
The Government will continue to closely monitor the situation’s evolution closely, together with the international partners. The Government’s priority is and always will be the Portuguese community in Venezuela’s safety.
