Statement on the situation in the Middle East

The Portuguese Government is following with deep concern and since the first hour the evolution of the situation in the Middle East in close cooperation with our European partners, partners in the region, and NATO allies.

Under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our diplomatic network, particularly via the embassies in the region is fully mobilised to protect our citizens, who we ask for extreme caution. Protecting civilians is essential and must be fully ensured.

Portugal asks for maximum restraint from all parties to avoid an escalation, to protect peace and international security, and to ensure regional stability in line with the United Nations Charter. To this end, Iran’s nuclear programme, which has long been a concern for the international community, must cease.

We also insist, as we always have, on the need for Iran to respect its people’s human rights, which have been violated in an unacceptable manner.

The Portuguese Government condemns Iran’s unjustified attacks on neighbouring countries in the region, among which Saudi Arabia, Katar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Jordan, which must cease immediately.
