Prime Minister congratulates António José Seguro and ensures institutional cooperation

The Portuguese Prime Minister congratulated António José Seguro on being elected President of the Republic and ensured the Government is willing to work towards Portugal’s future.

In a statement given in Porto, Luís Montenegro stated the Government is willing to work towards convergence, safeguarding "the interest of the Portuguese people, with the cooperation and sense with which we serve Portugal and the Portuguese people in a constructive and positive manner, each one under the task enshrined in the Constitution".

Luís Montenegro claimed that "cooperation and collaboration" will be the key element in ensuring Portugal’s "political, economic, financial, and social stability" at a time when all the sovereign bodies are legitimised. He added that the Portuguese people find in these three dimensions the political representation and hope to see their problems overcome.

The Government, in turn, finds in Parliament and the President-elect the partners to handle what is everyone’s with ambition, a sense of convergence, and responsibility.

The prime Minister felt that the period that is now opening up of around three and a half years without national elections "can provide the continuity of the Government programme’s execution", contributing to solving many of the problems that afflict the Portuguese people’s life. He noted public healthcare, access to education and housing, mobility guarantees, and the economy’s growth as essential factors to sustain and develop the country’s future. 

The Prime Minister likewise reiterated the purpose of continuing with the State reform to ensure a swifter response capacity to people and companies’ requests, making it more efficient and capable of looking to the future, bequeathing on coming generations a cared-for territory with environmental sustainability.
