Portugal strengthens climate commitment and cooperation with Brazil

The Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro attended the Climate Summit in Belém do Pará, Brazil, where he called on concrete action against the effects of climate change that are already felt in Portugal and elsewhere in the world.

"The last few years have shown the effect of climate change in many of our countries. Portugal has been an example of this with extreme heat waves and wildland fires followed by heavy rainfall" he claimed, advocating a "collective, coordinated, and sustained" response.

Luís Montenegro also met with the President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to whom he noted the amendments to the Foreigners Act "to ensure full tranquillity for the Brazilian community residing in Portugal." He also stressed that the government stands for "a more contained and regulated immigration so it can also be more humane and offer more dignity for those who pick Portugal as their home ".

The boost in economic and industrial exchanges between both countries was also addressed during the meeting, particularly in the field of defence and aviation via the cooperation between Embraer and OGMA – Portuguese Aeronautical Industry.

The Climate Summit, hosted by the President of Brazil met in Belém – delegations from 143 countries attended and it is prior to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) to be held in November 2025.
