Portugal is sending humanitarian aid to support the Mozambican population affected by the floods that have hit the country in the last few weeks. This includes
- An initial contingent with 36 soldiers in the next few hours, that can be increased up to a maximum of 100 personnel from the Rapid Reaction Force, with several different skills. The force will ensure humanitarian relief to the Mozambican population and is geared with military emergency support modules, namely command and control, healthcare support, engineering, civilian-military cooperation, search and rescue, and support services, as well as ten tonnes of material
- 300 thousand euros through Camões – Cooperation and Language Institute to assist in humanitarian response under United Nations/OCHA coordination
- 2 LNEC (Engineering) experts in the fields of dams, infrastructure and flood management that will be part of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team, with 400 toiletry kits, 125 kitchen kits and 15 tents
- 1 national expert in the field of health to be part of a UNDAC team. If necessary, a medical emergency team may also be deployed to assist a joint force, as well as a field hospital.
The humanitarian emergency status due to the floods hitting several regions of Mozambique with significant impact on the local population has led the Mozambican authorities to request humanitarian assistance and Portugal readily responded.
