The Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel met on Monday in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the Great Hall of the People. The meeting was to prepare Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s upcoming official visit to the People’s Republic of China, which will begin on Tuesday.

Following the meeting, the Minister stressed "the unique role" China can play in persuading the Russian Federation to accept a cease-fire and pave the way towards a negotiation process favouring peace in Ukraine, noting that this is "a unique role that only few world powers have".

The Portuguese member of Government also ranked Portugal and China’s relationship as "pretty unimpeded", saying there is convergence on perspectives regarding relevant matters on the international agenda.

In the initial speech, open to the media, Wang Yi advocated the importance of the multilateral system, based on the UN and international law, and noted that the current international setting "makes dialogue and cooperation more urgent".
