The Government is moving forward with the revision of the Mondego’s water works following the floods that affeced the Coimbra region.
"This is a system that has been around for many years and needs upgrading, especially considering the challenges we did not have before", Luís Montenegro claimed.
According to the Prime Minister, this revision will be done depending on the "assessment made with this event, which was an extreme event".
"We have a hydraulic system that dates back to the 1970’s and which is showing resistance and resilience despite everything, but it is now clear it is no longer enough and needs to have contingency solutions for the future", he noted.
During a visit to the region with members of Government, municipal officials, and the President of the Republic, Luís Montenegro reiterated the intent to move forward with the Girabolhos dam construction.
The Prime Minister stressed that the system’s revision will require "the effort of local Government and academia to try to come up with a structural solution", indicating the need to have the water works with "greater capacity to resist such extreme events" as the ones felt recently.
"We have a pressing situation on our hands and that is what we need to handle, that is what we are doing", he pointed out.
Luís Montenegro also stressed the cooperation between the Government bodies and aeras to ensure a response to the current situation.
