In coordination with the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, the Secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities undertook the reform of the Portuguese consular network in Brazil, a measure that had been planned for a long time but was always postponed; it now updates and boosts Portugal’s consular presence in the country.
The reform entailed closing down the Portuguese Vice-Consulates in Recife, Belém do Pará, Curitiba, Fortaleza, and Porto Alegre; and setting up the Portuguese Consulate-General in Recife and the Portuguese Consulates in Belém do Pará, Curitiba, Fortaleza, and Porto Alegre.
This reorganisation is to improve the consular network’s response capacity, ensuring greater proximity, efficiency, and quality in service to the Portuguese and Brazilian communities.
At the same time, it represents a boost in bilateral relations between Portugal and Brazil, one of the largest Portuguese emigration destinations and a strategic partner in the Portuguese-speaking world.
Through this measure, the Government meets a commitment take non with the Portuguese communities, acknowledging the diaspora as a strategic asset in national development and the consular network as an essential tool to guarantee assistance, cultural ties, and economic cooperation.
