Formula 1 returns to Portugal in 2027 and 2028 with the Algarve Grand Prix

Portugal is again on the World Formula 1 Championship schedule in 2027 and 2028 with the Grand Prix in the Algarve International Racetrack in Portimão. The commitment was formalised during a ceremony in London at the end of last week with the Secretary of State for Tourism Pedro Machado in attendance.

The Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion Castro Almeida stresses that the return of the Formula 1 "reaffirms Portugal in the major international events circuit with a direct impact on the economy, the creation of jobs and attracting investment". According to the member of Government, this strategic decision contributes to "affirming the image of a modern, ambitious, and dynamic Portugal with high organisational capabilities".

The Government notes that holding the Algarve Grand Prix will yield significant economic and social effects, namely driving corporate activity, boosting the local supply chain and creating value for small and medium sized enterprises, with direct reflections in territorial cohesion and regional development.

The race is aligned with the National Tourism Strategy, boosting the Algarve and the country’s international notoriety as a major event destination. It is estimated that each edition may attract around 200 thousand visitors over three days between approximately 150 thousand spectators and more than 50 thousand professionals connected to the organisation and teams.

Formula 1 is regulated by the International Automobile Federation and is one of the sporting events with the greatest global projection, comparable to the Olympics and the main football championships, meaning it is an important instrument in economic diplomacy and foreign promotion.

Throughout its history, Portugal hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix in four different circuits (Boavista, Monsanto, Estoril, and the Algarve). The return of the race to Portugal boosts this tradition and consolidates Portugal’s positioning in the international sports and economic panorama.
