Artificial intelligence: Government sets National Agenda with more than 400 million euros

The Government presented the National Agenda for Artificial Intelligence (ANIA), which will use more than 400 million euros by 2030 to accelerate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the economy and Public Administration. The funding is mostly European, with a small impact on the State Budget.

A 25-million-euro investment is estimated for the public sector to apply AI in areas such as public procurement, billing, recruitment, and permits with the aim of cutting red tape, expediting responses and improving the services offered to citizens and companies.

According to the Minister in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and of State Reform Gonçalo Matias, adopting AI is "an important factor in the country’s development", enabling a boost in competitiveness, productivity, and the creation of public value in a context where Portugal haste conditions to take on a leading role in Europe.

The agenda presumes citizens’ trust as its central pillar, ensuring ethical, safe, and responsible use of AI in line with the European AI Act.

The measures include setting up an AI Centre of Excellence in Public Administration, training programmes for civil servants, and boosting support for AI adoption in SMEs.
