The Portugal–Mozambique Economic Forum, hosted under the 6th bilateral summit, brought together today dozens of companies and public entities from both countries, reinforcing the investment in economic cooperation and identifying new investment opportunities.
Hosted by AICEP in collaboration with APIEX and several Portuguese and Mozambican corporate confederations, the aim of the meeting was to drive bilateral investment and assist companies’ international expansion during a phase of greater strategic approximation between Lisbon and Maputo.
The Prime Minister stressed that Portugal is experiencing "unique times", upholding that the current economic conditions enable the country to take on more ambitious targets and accelerate growth. Luís Montenegro noted that Portugal was recently distinguished by The Economist as the "economy of the year", acknowledgement that comes from the "financial, economic, social, and political stability" obtained.
The Head of Government reiterated the announcement made at the final summit conference: the set-up of a credit line up to 500 million euros to incentivise Portuguese companies’ investment in Mozambique.
He explained the instrument will kick off with 100 million euros in the first year, progressively rising until it hits the full amount. "With it, we wish to bring meaning to the confidence we have in the Mozambican economy and tell the Portuguese companies we are by their side in their international expansion process", he stated.
The Mozambican President Daniel Chapo noted that the new funding line may grow as the projects show solidity and capacity for execution. "It will all depend on the way in which we do business, how we meet our obligations. If we are serious and efficient, certainly this amount will grow", he stated, praising the Prime Minister’s vision by launching a financial partnership with the potential to expand.
Daniel Chapo also stressed that Mozambique "does not want one-time investors, rather long-term partners", calling on the reinforcement of a sustained entrepreneurial cooperation.
He seemed impressed with the scale of the meeting and admitted a similar forum may be held in Mozambique in 2026 with the aim of assessing the outcomes achieved. At the end of the summit, he reiterated the invitation made to the Prime Minister to visit his country in an official capacity.
