The Portuguese Government made a 1.5-million-euro donation to the Global Fund to Fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, under the Eighth Global Fund Replenishment.
The announcement was made on Thursday, 26 September on the side of the United Nations General Assembly, in which the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Ana Isabel Xavier and the Secretary of State for Health Ana Povo took part.
This renewed support to the Global Fund reflects Portugal’s strong commitment to fighting infectious diseases and boosting healthcare systems. According to Ana Isabel Xavier, "Portugal stands on the side of The Global Fund, stressing our commitment to multilateral cooperation, global solidarity, and the construction of a world where no one is left behind." Ana Povo in turn sustains that "Portugal is determined in accelerating the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, reduce poverty and move forward in universal healthcare coverage. By investing in health, we are investing in human dignity, social justice, and sustainable development, building a fairer world, more resilient for everyone."
We note that The Global Fund has a long-standing partnership with Portugal. The Camões Institute, headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the body that manages Portugal’s participation and funding, reflecting our country’s commitment to global health.

In Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé e Príncipe, and East Timor, 2.2 million people received HIV antiviral treatment and more than 200 thousand were treated with anti-tuberculous medication.
In 2024, The Global Fund distributed almost 2.3 million insecticide-laden anti-mosquito nets in these Portuguese-speaking countries.
Each life saved and each infection avoided has a multiplying effect on families, communities, and entire nations.
In addition to the financial contribution to The Global Fund, Portugal offers essential technical assistance to Portuguese-speaking countries throughout the world where the lack of Portuguese-speaking healthcare experts is particularly felt.
