The Portuguese Prime Minister highlighted the allocation of the Financial Services and Savings and Investment Union brief to the European Commissioner appointed by Portugal: Maria Luís Albuquerque. The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced the appointment as part of the College of Commissioners for the following institutional cycle (2024-2029).

In a statement, the Prime Minister praised the "the quality and coherence of the composition of the College of Commissioners" and stressed the importance of the brief allocated to the former Minister of Finance: "we note the crucial brief allocated to the Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque, appointed by Portugal. This will be a vital sector to build the Capital Markets Union, develop private investment, and boost the European innovation capability".

Luís Montenegro also said that the subjects under Maria Luís Albuquerque’s belt, such as Financial Services and the Savings Union, are considered pivotal for the European Union’s strategy, as indicated by the recent Letta and Draghi reports, with a special focus on diversifying financing sources and promoting economic growth.

"Diversifying financing sources is essential to foster economic growth and investment. This is crucial to progress and the sustainability of Europe’s social and economic project, as well as the Union’s capacity to meet the expectations and interests of the European and Portuguese citizens", the Prime Minister concluded.
