New Government will pursue foreign and defence policies

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stressed that "we will continue to provide Ukraine with full support within the European Union and NATO framework".

The Government headed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro took office following the elections held on 10 March.

In his inauguration speech, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated that "in foreign policy and national defence, we will pursue our European integration, strengthening the relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries and Portugal's Atlantic and maritime vocation".

"In the European Union, we will advocate enlargement and give privileged and permanent attention to institutional and financial reform," he said.

In the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, "we will do everything to project our community of brotherly countries on a global level".

"In NATO, we will honour with unwavering solidarity our commitment as founders"

Luís Montenegro stressed that "in a world at war, in a Europe at war, we reiterate our condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and we will continue to give Ukraine full support within the European Union and NATO framework".

"In the international community, and in the United Nations in particular, we will continue to be uncompromising advocates of peace, democracy, human rights and humanitarian assistance," he further stated.
