Virtual Consulate will help Portuguese citizens abroad

From now on, citizens residing abroad will be able to access the consulate services without leaving their home on their smartphone or computer

The Virtual Consulate, which is now accessible via the Communities Portal, is a SIMPLEX measure funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility that brings Public Administration services to the Portuguese communities abroad, and offers continuity to the consular system’s digital transformation and dematerialisation.

The platform is available as of today, three years before the expected date. In this first roll-out stage, you can access nine essential services:

Consular registry: registering with the consulate, updating the enrolment form, transferring post, certification of consular record

Civil Registry: birth registration for children over one year of age with at least one Portuguese parent, birth registration for infants under one year of age and request for first Citizen’s Card, death registration

Civil Identification: Citizen Card renewal for persons over 25 years of age

Online scheduling an appointment for a consulate.

Authentication for the Virtual Consulate platform is done via a Digital Mobile Key or with a Citizen Card and card reader, ensuring user security.

The Virtual Consulate is a joint effort of the Directorate-General for Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities and the Agency for Administrative Modernisation.

Launching this new channel for the Portuguese consular network is a way of commemorating Portugal, Camões and The Portuguese Communities Day.
