Four Portuguese aeronautical firms and the Brazilian Embraer signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of technologies pertaining to the A-29 Super Tucano plane in its recently launched version, the A-29N, to fit the needs of the NATO member states.
The memorandum was signed signed at the OGMA facilities in Alverca, Vila Franca de Xira in the presence of the Prime Minister António Costa and the President of Brazil Lula da Silva and aims subsidiarily to develop Portugal’s defence technological and industrial base.
The Portuguese companies that signed the memorandum with Embraer are the Product Development and Engineering Centre (CEiiA), Empordef Information Technologies (ETI), GMV, and OGMA (Aeronautical Material General Workshops).
Embraer will manufacture the Super Tucano plane using NATO standards in partnership with OGMA, of which the Brazilian company has had a majority stake since 2004.
The Super Tucano is a training and light combat aircraft produced for the Brazilian Air Force which is also being used by other South American Air Forces.
OGMA and other Portuguese firms took part in the design and take part in the manufacturing of the KC-390 carrier aircraft.
Portugal purchased five of these aircraft in 2019 to be delivered to the Portuguese Air Force, one plane per year, as of 2023, for the amount of 872 million euros.
The agreement was signed as part of the official four-day-visit of the Brazilian President to Portugal, of which we note the 13th Summit between both Governments.
