Portugal at a risk of poverty below the EU average

Portugal went from being 8th to being 12th place

The risk of poverty and social exclusion dropped in Portugal in 2022 and our country is now below the European Union average for this indicator, as per Eurostat data today.

Portugal recorded the second lowest risk of poverty and social exclusion since the start of Eurostat records (2015), which was only overcome by the 2020 rate 2020 (20%). There are currently 659 thousand people less in this position when compared to 2015.

According to the body that collects statistics in the European Union, 20.1% of the Portuguese population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2022, which places Portugal 12th among the European countries and below the EU average, which was 21.6%.

In the previous year (2021), the Portuguese rate was 22.4%, which placed us 8th in the Europe and above the EU average, which was 21.7%.

The highest rates recorded in the EU in 2022 were in Romania (34%), Bulgaria (32%), Greece and Spain (26%). The Czech Republic (12%) and Slovenia (13%) have the lowest rates.

This indicator assesses the population that meets at least one of the following three conditions: people at risk of poverty, who live in intensive labour households with low per capita, or in a situation of severe material or social deprivation.
