A European Union fit for the future

"A European Union fit for the future", an article published today and signed by the Portuguese Secretary of State for European Affairs and his counterparts from France and Germany.

The text stresses the need for reform that enable the European Union’s structure and functioning to be adapted for the future, namely in terms of its budget, calling on the creation of new European own resources.

(i) "Our goal should be a European Union that has the tools and financial capacities to live up to the aspirations of its young generation.

(ii) "Ukraine’s reconstruction and integration into the EU will be a key element of the continent’s security. Just as the United States made history with the Marshall Plan, the EU must make history with Ukraine".

(iii) "We need to focus on our political priorities and will need additional, well-targeted European own resources. We already agreed on a roadmap in this direction in 2020 – we should now walk the talk."

"Today, dozens of young people inspired by the European ideals of peace, prosperity and solidarity meet in Ponte da Barca, northwestern Portugal. We, the Secretaries of State for Europe of Portugal, France, and Germany, join them to imagine the European Union’s future ", noted Tiago Antunes, Portuguese Secretary of State for European Affairs, , Laurence Boone, French Secretary of State for Europe, and Anna Lührmann, German Minister of State for Europe and Climate.
