2023 was the best year ever for tourism

"This was in fact a very positive year for the country’s tourism, as well as for Portugal as a whole. It was a record year, the best ever in the history of tourism in Portugal", the Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services Nuno Fazenda stated in a public session of the Turismo de Portugal Tourism Board held in Lisbon on Wednesday 3 January.

Throughout the year that now ended, several indicators showed record high levels of demand. In 2023, more than 30 million guests were accounted for, a growth of around 10% compared to 2019, which had been the best year for tourism until then, and 77 million overnight stays.

Revenue of around 25 billion euros represents a 37% growth on 2019 and 18.5% on 2022.

This growth is felt throughout the country and during the year. "A structural shift in our tourism", the Secretary of State stressed, who claimed to believe that tourism "will grow further in 2024".
