Joint Statement of the 13th Luso-Brazilian Summit

Portugal and Brazil: a partnership for the future

1. The Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, and the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, met in Lisbon on 22 April 2023 for the 13th Bilateral Summit after an interruption of more than six years, and assesses the entire scope of the bilateral relations between the countries and discussed matters of regional and international current affairs.

2. In a setting of great friendship and with the force and political symbolic nature of celebrating the 25 of April revolution of as a backdrop, the two Heads of Government reclaimed the unique ties between both countries, widely represented on the historical, social, cultural, and economic fields, and the common values of democracy, the rule of law and human rights, as well as the political commitment to continue fighting against poverty and against all forms of racial discrimination to foster well-being for the two peoples and have a balanced, fair, inclusive social-economic development, one that respects gender equality and is sustainable.

3. The two Heads of Government highly praised the ceremony to deliver the Camões prize to Chico Buarque, who won in 2019.

4. The two decision-makers restated their resolute commitment to uphold effective multilateralism based on international law and the UN Charter, reiterating their firm support of international peace and security, and the States’ sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also emphasised the imperious and pressing need to face the global challenges of climate change and food security and contribute to sustainable development, the eradication of poverty, and social inclusion.
