The Portuguese Prime Minister took part in the opening of the New European Bauhaus High-Level Conference, an initiative by the European Commission, the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union and the EIB. It is an invitation to "explore new and better ways to live together".

The Prime Minister took part in this initiative launched by the European Commission in January, one which aims to combine a cultural and aesthetic movement with climate change, by mobilizing designers, architects, engineers and scientists to "reinvent a sustainable way of living".

"By bringing art and scientific know-how under the same roof for the benefit of the whole of society, the New European Bauhaus may contribute to build a better future, ensuring that tomorrow’s buildings and furniture aren’t simply sustainable, efficient and inclusive, yet also more stylish", he stated.

António Costa claimed that "one hundred years on from the launch of Bauhaus, on a continent devastated by World War I, the New European Bauhaus brings art and architecture back to its social mission, adapting cities to human needs and bringing the European Green Deal into our lives and homes".

The New European Bauhaus, in its five dimensions – sustainability, aesthetics, inclusion, accessibility and the cost of housing and residential environments, "is of extreme importance to make sure we deliver on our goal to be carbon neutral in 2050".

The European Union strives to make sure the social and economic recovery due to the pandemic is based on the "green and digital transition". The Prime Minister further underlined that this recovery must also "represent real improvements" in citizens’ lives.

In addition to António Costa, also in attendance were the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
