PM José Sócrates proposes an extension of the G20 basis

The Portuguese Prime Minister wrote to the Presidents of the European Council, Mirek Topolánek, the European Commission, Durão Barroso, and the G20, Gordon Brown, proposing «to extend the basis of the international consensus regarding policy action addressing the financial and economic crisis and the reform of the international financial system» to countries and areas outside the G20. PM José Sócrates proposes that the EU «assume a pivotal part in promoting (…) a multilateral mechanism in which regional groupings and the regional financial institutions would have their voice».
